Chuck Currie
Clarinetist and Saxophonist <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chuck Currie is a clarinetist and saxophonist who performs with the Meridiem Wind Orchestra<\/a>, Sax Noir<\/a>, Pacific Basswood<\/a>, Victoria on Stage Musical Theatre<\/a>, the CPO Band<\/a>, the Civic Orchestra of Victoria<\/a> and the Bass Clarinet Choir of the Bass Clarinet Association of Canada<\/a>. He has performed and recorded with the\u00a0Vancouver Island Symphony<\/a>, the\u00a0Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble<\/a>,\u00a0The Band of the 15th Field Regiment, Royal\u00a0Canadian Artillery<\/a>, and the Vancouver Saxophone Ensemble. He is the founder of Canada’s only professional saxophone ensemble, the Celestial Saxophone Orchestra<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chuck is a Chedeville<\/a>, JodyJazz<\/a>,  Rousseau<\/a>, Legere<\/a>, Backun Canada<\/a>, Vandoren<\/a>, Zac Ligature <\/a>and Yanagisawa<\/a> artist-endorser and clinician performing on Backun Lumiere Clarinets<\/a>, the Backun Q Series Bass Clarinet<\/a>, and Yanagisawa Saxophones<\/a>. He uses Hercules Stands<\/a> exclusively for his instruments and sheet music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has performed at Canadian Music Educator Association<\/a> conventions, World Association of Bands and Ensembles<\/a> conferences, North American Saxophone Alliance<\/a> conferences and at International Clarinet Association<\/a> Clarinetfests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A reviewer of the opening concert of the Vancouver 2007 Clarinetfest reported \u201cHe did an absolutely amazing job of interpreting the bass clarinet solos in Frank Ticheli\u2019s Blue Shades<\/em>. Never have I heard a bass clarinet shape and bend notes like that\u2026what amazing projection.  The a cappella duet with Eddie Daniels in Paganini in Metropolis <\/em>was also magnificent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He teaches at his Sax<\/em> Noir Studio<\/em><\/a> in Victoria, BC. He was the Clarinet and Saxophone Instructor at St Georges School<\/a> for over two decades, and has conducted clinics and master classes for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the BC Music Educator’s Association. Chuck was the Saxophone, Clarinet and Low Woodwind playing coach of the British Columbia Honour Wind Ensemble<\/a>. He currently chairs the Meridiem Wind Orchestra\u2019s Victoria School Clinic Program and their annual Vancouver Island Youth Soloist Competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students have auditioned successfully for the Vancouver Philharmonic Orchestra<\/a>, the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra<\/a>, the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra<\/a>, the Canadian Wind Orchestra<\/a>, the UBC School of Music<\/a> , the National Youth Band of Canada<\/a>, the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble<\/a>, and the International Honors Wind Symphony <\/a>at Lincoln Center, New York.<\/p>\n\n\n

Dozens of Chuck\u2019s articles and reviews on players, equipment and pedagogy have been published by the BC Band Journal, Canadian Winds<\/a> magazine, the BC Music Educators Journal<\/a>, and Clarinet & Saxophone Magazine<\/a>, Bandtalk, The Canadian Music Educator, and other international journals.  His articles have reached over 25,000 reads on ResearchGate<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chuck is a member of the British Columbia Registered Music Teacher’s Association<\/a>, and the BC Music Educators Association<\/a>. He was inducted as a Canadian Champion for Music Education<\/a> by the Coalition for Music Education in 2010.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
